Good health in 2017!

January is often a time when our attention turns to our personal health, or lack thereof. The excessive indulgence of the holiday period, combined with the lethargy that can accompany the winter months, so often leaves us feeling the need to set an intention or make a resolution to get fitter, lose weight, drink less, redress that work/life imbalance or start running again.

So what about our organisations? What about their health? At Neon our goal is to help create healthy organisations where individuals and teams flourish, and where the business thrives. Some of the things we see as core to organisational health are clarity of purpose, quality of relationship, awareness of impact at an individual and organisational level and creativity. There are other important components too, such as the relationship an organisation has with its past, the extent to which the culture fosters self-management and is inclusive of all voices, even those less popular, and the ability of those within it to have those difficult conversations.

Organisations are powerful and complex systems that have a monumental impact on the health of those within and outside them, for better and for worse. And so I ask you, how is yours faring? The one you work in? The one you manage or lead? If you were to give it a colour, what colour would it be? How vibrant or faded would that colour be? Where are the hotspots where energy is high, and where are those areas which are flagging? What kind of conversations do your people have and which do they avoid? To what extent have formulaic approaches eroded any sense of creativity and how strong is the ability to think, question and take action, quite separate from any intervention from management?

And if, in the light of that, there were ONE THING you chose to focus on in order to enhance the health of your team or organisation, what would it be?
